Species You'll Want to Hook

Alright, let's break down the all-stars you'll be chasing on this trip. First up, we've got the California Flounder. These flatfish might not win any beauty contests, but they're masters of camouflage and put up a surprising fight for their size. Look for them hanging out on sandy bottoms, especially during the fall when they're fattening up for spawning season. Anglers love 'em for their tasty white meat – nothing beats a fresh flounder fillet!

Next, we've got the Largemouth Bass. Now, you might be thinking, "Bass? In the salt?" But trust me, the marshes around here are full of 'em, and they grow big. These guys are ambush predators, so we'll be targeting structure like sunken logs or vegetation edges. Spring is prime time when they're in the shallows spawning, but you can catch 'em year-round if you know where to look.

Black Drum are the heavyweights of our lineup. These bruisers can grow over 100 pounds, and even the smaller ones will give your arms a workout. They love crustaceans, so we'll be using crab or shrimp to entice them. The big ones make that distinctive drumming sound that'll rattle your rod – it's something you've gotta experience!

Sheepshead, or what we like to call "convict fish" because of their black and white stripes, are the tricksters of the bunch. They've got those human-like teeth that they use to crush barnacles and crabs. Catching these guys takes some finesse – they're notorious bait stealers. But man, once you get the hang of it, it's addictive. Plus, they're excellent eating.

The Speckled Trout, or "specks" as we call 'em, are probably the most sought-after inshore fish in Louisiana. These silver beauties with their spotted backs are fast, aggressive, and a blast to catch on light tackle. We target them year-round, but the fall is when you can really load the boat. Nothing beats the sound of a trout smashing a topwater lure at dawn!

Last but definitely not least, we've got the Redfish. These copper-colored bulldogs are the pride of Louisiana fishing. They'll test your drag in the open water and your nerves in the shallows where you can sight-cast to them. The smaller ones, what we call "rat reds," are perfect for the table, while the big bulls over 27 inches are catch-and-release and will give you the fight of your life. Redfish are here all year, but the action really heats up in the late summer and fall when they school up to spawn.

Time to Book Your Spot

Look, I could go on all day about the fish we catch and the good times we have out here, but nothing beats experiencing it for yourself. Whether you're looking to fill the cooler with some of the best-eating fish in the Gulf or just want to bend a rod and make some memories, we've got you covered. Our 8-hour trip gives you plenty of time to really explore what Bayou Dularge has to offer, and with room for up to 6 people, it's perfect for a group of buddies or the whole family. Just remember, the fish are always biting, but our calendar fills up fast. So what are you waiting for? Give us a call, and let's get you out on the water. Trust me, once you fish with Catchdat! Charters, you'll be hooked for life!

Black Drum

Black drum are the bulldogs of our bays - stocky fighters that'll test your tackle. Most run 5-30 pounds, but we occasionally hook monsters over 50 pounds. Look for them around oyster reefs, pilings, and other structure in 3-6 feet of water. Spring is prime time as they school up to spawn, but we catch them year-round. Anglers love black drum for their strong fights and good table fare, especially the smaller ones under 15 pounds. The big ones can be tough and less tasty. My top tip: use fresh crab or shrimp for bait. Black drum have sensitive barbels they use to root out food, so a natural bait on the bottom is key. When you feel that telltale thump, give them a second to take it before setting the hook. Get ready for a battle - these bruisers don't give up easy!

Black Drum

California Flounder

The California Flounder is a unique flatfish you'll find hugging the bottom in our coastal waters. These guys can grow up to 60 inches and 70 pounds, though most are much smaller. Look for them in sandy areas up to 330 feet deep, but we usually target them in shallower spots around 100 feet. Spring is prime time when they're spawning, but we catch 'em year-round. Folks love going after flounder for their mild, buttery taste and the challenge of hooking one. They're masters of camouflage, blending right into the sand. My top tip: use a trap hook with live bait like bull minnows or squid. Let it sit on the bottom, then wait for that telltale nibble before setting the hook. Patience is key with these sneaky bottom-dwellers. They're not big fighters, but landing a big one is always satisfying.

California Flounder

Largemouth Bass

Largemouth bass are the kings of our freshwater fishing here in Louisiana. These aggressive predators average 1-4 pounds but can top 10 pounds in our fertile waters. You'll find them hanging around submerged logs, weed beds, and other cover in our ponds and lakes. Spring and fall are prime bass fishing seasons when they're most active. Folks love chasing largemouth for their explosive strikes and acrobatic fights. Nothing beats the thrill of a big bass smashing a topwater lure! My go-to trick is working a plastic worm slowly along the bottom near cover. Give it a few twitches, then let it sit. Bass often hit on the pause. Match your lure color to the water clarity - darker colors in murky water, lighter in clear. With some patience and the right presentation, you'll be hooked on bass fishing in no time.

Largemouth Bass

Redfish

Redfish are the bruisers of our coastal flats, known for their copper color and black spot near the tail. Most run 3-10 pounds, but we hook some over 20 pounds in deeper water. Look for them tailing in shallow marsh ponds or cruising along oyster reefs. Fall is prime time as they school up, but we catch reds year-round. Anglers love them for their hard-pulling fights and excellent table fare. Watching a big red crush a topwater lure is hard to beat! My go-to trick: use a gold spoon or scented soft plastic on a jighead. Work it slowly along the bottom, giving it occasional twitches. When you feel that thump, let the red run for a second before setting the hook. Get ready for a battle - these copper bulldogs don't give up easy!

Redfish

Sea Trout

Sea trout, also called speckled trout, are a favorite target in our coastal waters. Most run 1-3 pounds, but we occasionally hook gators over 5 pounds. Look for them around grass flats, oyster reefs, and channel edges in 2-6 feet of water. Spring and fall are prime seasons, but we catch specks year-round. Anglers love them for their aggressive strikes, sporty fights, and excellent table fare. Nothing beats a limit of fresh speckled trout for dinner! My top tip: use a popping cork rig with live shrimp or a soft plastic under it. Work it with sharp jerks to make noise and attract trout. When you see that cork disappear, set the hook fast. Specks have soft mouths, so a steady pressure is key to landing them. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be hooked on trout fishing.

Sea Trout

Sheepshead

Sheepshead are the convicts of our coastal waters, with their distinctive black and white stripes. Most run 1-8 pounds, but we occasionally hook some over 10 pounds. Look for them around barnacle-covered structures like pilings, reefs, and jetties. Winter and early spring are prime sheepshead seasons as they move inshore to spawn. Anglers love targeting them for their tasty white meat and the challenge of hooking these bait stealers. Their human-like teeth can make for some interesting catches! My go-to trick: use a small, sharp hook with fiddler crabs or oysters for bait. Fish right up against structure and be ready for the lightest of bites. When you feel that tap, give it a quick hook set. Sheepshead are masters at stealing bait, so patience and a quick hand are key to landing these striped tricksters.
